Volunteer Opportunities

“As a member of Friend for Life, giving one on one support to a person recently diagnosed with cancer is one of my most personally rewarding volunteer activities. Though active in several other organizations, none of the volunteer work is so personally rewarding as trying to provide support as a cancer survivor at a most traumatic time for a person recently diagnosed. Giving support to a recently diagnosed cancer patient makes each experience a memorable one.  It sounds trite, but it is so true: I get much more than I give!”     Al Jecker, lymphoma survivor

Friend for Life's basic premise is that the individual most empathic to the concerns of a person recently diagnosed with cancer is someone who has also experienced a cancer diagnosis. Volunteers must be at least six months past an acute cancer episode and are required to participate in training conducted by healthcare professionals. They assist others in facing the initial emotional, psychological and practical uncertainties that accompany a cancer diagnosis.

As cancer survivors, our volunteers bring a unique sensitivity to patients, their families and friends at a time of great apprehension and vulnerability. We try to match demographic information as well as diagnosis and treatment when making volunteer-referral contacts in order to enhance interaction and understanding.

Training typically takes place twice each year, is held on a Saturday and lasts a full day. Materials and lunch are provided.

If you would like to be notified of upcoming trainings, please contact us via phone, fax, e-mail, or standard mail. Include your name, telephone number where you can be reached during the day, e-mail address and mailing address.
