Who we are

“When I made this call [to Friend for Life] I was matched with a volunteer who had the same type of breast cancer and treatment [that I had] and understood better than anyone how I was feeling. I can’t begin to tell you how comforting it was and is to have someone a phone call away...As cancer survivors we build strong bonds and sometimes, new friendships...We need all the support we can get and it’s in the giving and receiving of our time and information that we become stronger.”    Dianne Edelen, volunteer

Friend for Life is a non-profit support network of cancer survivors that serves the emotional and psychological needs of individuals recently diagnosed with cancer and their families and friends. Our services are offered free of charge.

“A big part of the  ‘cancer experience’ is fear. I can’t personally stop someone’s cancer cells from multiplying, or ease their physical pain. However, through Friend for Life, I have felt enormous satisfaction at reducing the level of a newly diagnosed patient’s fear. Knowing there are alternatives and other patients to talk to seems to be a comfort to many I have touched. It uplifts my spirit to know I have made someone’s journey through the ‘Valley of the Unknown’ a little easier. Sharing information is a big part of conquering this disease.”  Sharon Guthrie, multiple myeloma survivor

When Friend for Life is contacted by someone diagnosed with cancer, we put them in touch with a trained volunteer who has encountered the same form of cancer.  Whenever possible, we match age, gender or similar interests. Support is also available for family and friends.

Our  volunteers do not advise or participate in medical decisions, but offer compassionate insights into their own experiences coping with cancer.  This helps those who are newly diagnosed sort through any anger, fear, anxiety or feelings of helplessness that they might be experiencing.

If you or a loved one has recently received a diagnosis of cancer and would like to receive the support of another who can offer the understanding of someone who's "been there," please contact us. Rest assured that you are not alone. Let us be a friend to you.
